He has been a creative force in music for more than 50 years, putting his name to a whole catalogue of classic and lasting albums as diverse as Raising Sand with Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, August and Everything After by Counting Crows and Spike by Elvis Costello.
Immersed in the vibrant radio waves of Beatles and Buddy Holly, he went on to cut his teeth in psychedelic bands in the 1960s and with Bob Dylan on the massive and extraordinary Rolling Thunder Revue tour in the mid-1970s.
On screen, he helped stage the magnificent Black & White Night Roy Orbison television tribute in 1988, was the founding executive music producer for the globally successful Nashville television series and has become the go-to producer of movie soundtracks, following his mega-success with Crazy Heart, Walk the Line, Hunger Games and the biggest of all – the blockbuster film O Brother Where Art Thou, which sold more than nine million copies and took American roots music to a whole new generation of young fans and musicians.
He is a respected activist on behalf of artists’ rights and, perhaps most important of all, T Bone has become a vital and dedicated musical archivist, capturing for all-time, unvarnished recordings by some of America’s greatest-ever musicians. Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Greg Allman, Alison Krauss, Ryan Bingham, B.B. King, the Secret Sisters and Gillian Welch, alongside the Chieftans, Diana Krall, Elton John and Leon Russell are among those who have worked with T Bone since the turn of the century.
Without doubt, T Bone is special. His meticulous attention to detail and unique sensitivity to the creative process underpin his peerless ability to infuse the deepest emotion and authenticity into his work. He truly believes that all the elements and dynamic range of sound that characterise the best recorded music were most in tune together at exactly the time when Buddy was making his classic floor-to-tape
recordings in the fifties.
(Joseph Henry) T Bone Burnett is a great friend of the Buddy Holly community and a huge hero of mine.
