Ray Benson

Huge in stature and personality, Ray Benson has been the ever-present frontman of Asleep at the Wheel since he formed the renowned western swing band with two friends in 1970.

Starting with their 1972 debut Comin’ Right at Ya, the band have released more than 20 albums. They’ve received numerous awards, including nine Grammys, and have had as many as 90 musicians pass through their ever-changing line up. Ray has been the one constant keeping the music of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys alive by releasing two hugely acclaimed tribute albums of songs by the king of western swing, while providing many new songs with the distinctive swing of country, blues and jazz.

In addition to his work with the band, Ray has also produced for Dale Watson, Suzy Bogguss, Merle Haggard, Aaron Neville, Brad Paisley and his great friend Willie Nelson, who also provided his distinctive vocals to the 2009 collaboration Willie and the Wheel. Ray and ‘the Wheel’ continue to tour extensively and he features in many music documentaries talking about the history of country music and those who keep it alive by introducing it to new audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
