But it’s clear to say there’s a bit of Buddy in Gallagher’s most direct works. Ever since he found a guitar lying around his house on a council estate in Manchester, Gallagher’s destiny was to entertain the world – and music his way out. Now his are some of the most instantly recognisable and well-known songs in stadiums, festivals, pubs and weddings the world over. To him, rock and roll simply means ‘freedom’, and Holly’s take on it endures because it’s ‘pure’: “‘That’ll Be the Day’ will never, ever get old’, he adds.”
His Buddy Holly Atkin, named ‘Slippin’ and Slidin’, is, as he puts it, “a rather unexpected treat. I’m even considering wearing glasses now, and getting a quiff!”
Now that he’s put bad blood with his brother Liam behind him to reunite Oasis, you’ll be hearing a lot of that no-frills Buddy-touched magic from Gallagher, keeping it straight and to the point. He’s still making history, not that the guy who wrote ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ cares too much about legacy. “I truly, truly couldn’t give a f**k about that,’ he admits. I live in the here and now. And right now, today, I’m happy with what I’ve done and indeed what I’m doing.”
