John formed the Desert Rose Band in 1986 with former Byrd Chris Hillman and their success propelled him from being a local musician to a national and international recording artist with five US number one singles and seven more in the top ten.
In 1993, John formed the Hellecasters with Will Ray and Jerry Donahue, and what was intended as a short-term collaboration resulted in four albums over the next 12 years. In 1994, he joined Elton John’s band for an 18-month tour and stayed with them for six years. He has also recorded and toured with many other major artists, including Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Emmylou Harris, Luciano Pavarotti, Johnny Cash, Barbra Streisand and Bob Dylan.
His love of ‘gypsy jazz’ inspired him to form the John Jorgenson Quintet in 2004 and in the same year he portrayed Django Reinhardt in the film Head in the Clouds. In 2009, he won a Grammy, with several other top guitarists, for the song ‘Cluster Pluck’.
