Elvis Costello

The son of a jazz trumpeter, London-born Declan MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, came to prominence as a post-punk singer-songwriter in the 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, was released in 1977 followed by This Year’s Model in 1978, by which time he had added the Attractions as his backing band.

With his oversized glasses giving him a Buddy Holly look, Elvis went on to have many more single and album successes over the subsequent decades. Differences between Elvis and the Attractions caused them to part company in 1986 (although they came back together for two albums in the mid-1990s), and much of his work since then has been as a solo artist.

He has co-written several original songs for motion pictures in collaboration with Burt Bacharach and T-Bone Burnett. He has also ventured into different musical genres, including country, jazz and classical.

In 2019, Elvis received the OBE for his services to music.
