When I was in the Teddy Bears, Phil Spector wrote ‘To Know Him is to Love Him’ for my voice. It was the first song he ever produced. The record became this monster hit, and it was considered one of the most important rock and roll songs. The song title was taken off Phil Spector’s father’s epitaph, and he turned it into a teenage lament and cast my voice. I would think that Buddy Holly loved that song because he had a sensitivity.
Once when we were on a plane, I remember singing with Phil and Marshall Leib because we had nothing to do with ourselves, and we sang ‘That’ll Be The Day’ and ‘Peggy Sue’. We all loved those songs. If you listen to ‘To Know Him is to Love Him’, Phil came up with the ‘Oh, no, no, no’. It was that sort of countermelody that he created. This is just my interpretation, maybe because he loved ‘Peggy Sue’ so much, but I think that song put it in his brain to do the countermelodies on ‘To Know Him is to Love Him’.
